Kongming said, “Though I am not especially talented, I once met a master who taught me the wondrous arts of Qimen Dunjia, which allow me to summon wind and rain. If the Grand Commander requires a southeastern wind, you can build an altar on South Screen Mountain, to be called the Seven Star Altar. It must be nine feet high, with three levels. Use one hundred and twenty men, holding flags and banners to surround it. I will perform the ritual on the altar and borrow a great southeastern wind for three days and three nights to aid the commander’s campaign. What do you say?”

Zhou Yu replied, “Let alone three days and three nights, even a single night of a great wind will be enough to achieve our great task. Time is of the essence, we cannot delay.”

Kongming then said, “I will pray for the wind on the twentieth day of the eleventh month, Jiazi, and the wind will cease on the twenty-second day, Bingyin. How does that sound?”

When Zhou Yu heard this, he was overjoyed and leaped to his feet. He immediately issued an order to dispatch five hundred elite soldiers to South Screen Mountain to build the altar, and allocated one hundred and twenty men to hold the flags and guard the altar, awaiting his command.

Borrowing the East Wind: Fact or Fiction?

The story of Zhou Yu dispatching a fake defector, Huang Gai, and Pang Tong offering the “linked ships” stratagem to Cao Cao means “all was ready, we only lacked the east wind.” However, in the middle of winter, where would a southeastern wind come from? This lack of wind, coupled with the sight of his command flag being blown to the southeast, made Zhou Yu so anxious he coughed up blood and fell ill. With the commander-in-chief sick before the battle, the entire army was filled with worry.

Zhuge Liang (Kongming) went to visit Zhou Yu and stated that he had previously learned the art of summoning wind and rain from a master. As long as Zhou Yu built him an altar, he could call forth a southeastern wind for three days and three nights. This is the first chapter of Kongming’s supernatural antics in the novel, the “Borrowing of the East Wind.” Throughout the rest of the book, he continues to be portrayed in this mysterious, near-divine manner.
